Vex R Redesign
This redesign was so fun, I was inspired when the trailer for this champion first came out and I knew I had to do a redesign. I used a lot of techniques in this redesign but the main ones I used was finding something unique to record, and morphing.
For the Main “Magic” sound I recorded me blowing into a long metal tube, trying to find weird resonances while quickly going back and forth. Then, a very long processing chain and Ta-Da! I wish it was as easy as typing it out, but it consisted of a few different reverbs, both taking advantage of early and late reflections at different points of processing. Grain delays, lots of Soothe2 to tame wild frequencies, and a modulated chorus effect.
I talked to the phenomenal sound designer Brandon Reader, who did the sound design for Vex at Riot Games. He mentioned a lot of gooey kinds of sounds for the shadow. I thought this was genius, he explained that he morphed sticky kind of recordings with synthesized sounds. So I did the same with some of my own recordings. I also used this approach with the processed metal whistle kind of magic sound.
Finally, the last important sound is when the shadow is carrying the Vex to the enemy. This sound started off in serum, making a patch with two different filters going, chorus to make it kind of bubble-y. I then added a long processing chain (Which I actually still have!)
The second effect is morph, this is what I was talking about earlier with the sticky-bloppy audio recordings. I used Morph to morph between the two , trying different amounts and processes between the two. But I also layered more of the oobleck (more later) Layer.
For the gross sounds, I used oobleck and mouth sounds. oobleck is great because its crazy easy to make and it sounds really gross. you might have make it in elementy class when you were a kid even. It’s just a whole lot of corn starch in water. Fill a bowl up halfway, gradually add cornstarch until it feels like you can’t add anymore. Its hard when you move quickly like slapping it, but liquid when you move slow; like dropping it.
That’s it for me this time, thank you for reading!
